Atlanta Intown Dining I love food! I love making it and eating it. I like enjoying it with others and I like to travel across the seas to experience new cuisine in new atmospheres. Here's my take on what's in Atlanta (intown, near me) for the tasting.
Atlanta Restaurants (and one cured meats market) I live in the heart of downtown Atlanta, near many new Dalliscious restaurants. Here are some of my favorites.
I've sampled and enjoyed: Abattoir- 4 of 5 Bwoops! Jarred meats, how can you go wrong? The burger and fries are Dalliscious as well. It is a bit salty - be warned. I even heard the table behind me say the same thing. Agave- 3 of 5 Bwoops! This is the place if you want a margarita or some tequila. They have many from which to choose and they aren't puny portions. The food is tasty too but not outstanding.
Ann's Snack Shack- 3.75 of 5 Bwoops! This is definitively a Dalliscious burger. The hand-pattied, more like just smashed, burgers cooked along with onions and secret seasoning are debatably worth the wait. If you've not yet been, I'd say it is worth the wait. There's more to dining here than eating; it's an experience. I think for a repeat visit, it may not be worht the wait unless you can time it to reduce your wait to around 30 minutes, a difficult task, easier if you don't mind dining alone. The value is pretty good if you don't order a named burger. The Ghetto or Hood burgers are much more expensive than ordering other burger options. Also you don't need a double unless you're eating for two. The fries are generic, but more tasty with again... the secret seasoning. I tasted celery salt and paprika in there. For more information on Miss Ann's shack, read my blog on it.
Antico Pizza Napoletana- 3.75 of 5 Bwoops! The pizza here is first rate and authentically Italian! Plus is arrives as quickly as fast food; I'm not kidding. If you ordered a plain cheeseburger at McDonald's it would arrive in the same amount of time. The only downfall is you have to order their pre-set pizzas, no special orders, and there's no alcohol. I haven't yet dined in the kitchen, but can't wait to try that.
Augustine's- 2.8 of 5 Bwoops! This is the rebirth of the Standard. It seems to have an identity issue, referred to as St. Augustine's and Young Augustine's. There's no website to verify what its name should be, but there is a Facebook page. Hello! This is the New Millinium; there's no reason a business shouldn't have its own web page. Along these same lines, there doesn't seem to be any great effort towards the food. There's nothing really wrong with it, but there's nothing to tout about it either. For drinking, it's good. They have many types of beers and they have TVs if you want to watch a game, but it's definitively not a sports bar.
Bakeshop- 3 of 5 Bwoops! I love the concept here, but they may need more time to get it running better. The fresh breads, pastries and sweets look and taste delicious. The sandwiches and soups need some help. They lack pizazz. A European baguette with only cheese and ham makes sense; that's how it's served in Europe. But Bakeshop has spread that idea to other items. A Cuban needs to have melted cheese, not barely warmed bread and not with cornichons. Cubans need real pickles not Frenchy ones! The roast beef supposedly had horseradish, but it just tasted like mayo and beef on a bun. How about some greens or some cheddar? The gazpacho needs help too. Puréeing it to juice isn't authentic and takes away from the beauty of the soup- all those chunks of yummy cukes, tomatoes, peppers and herbs. The website states "A true boulangerie and patisserie." This seems accurate. "A true lunchateria" does not.
Bocado- 3.5 of 5 Bwoops! Located in the West End, this is a Dalliscious dining establishment! The pimento cheese with smoky poblano is Dall-ish! My lunch mates also enjoyed the soups and salads. I need to test it out for dinner and the patio out back.
Bottle Rocket- 3.5 of 5 Bwoops! I want to like this place, lots. As the former Wasabi, they offer incredibly Dalliscious sushi. However, it's hard to linger here beyond a meal. There are only stools and I need a back to my chair after a while. They do have tasty beer selections and their red velvet waffle on V-Day was dalliscious. For brunch, you gotta have grits in my opinion and they got none. Boo.
*Busy Bee Cafe- 4.5 of 5 Bwoops! This is some of the best fried chicken in the city! Their sides do not disappoint either. Be warned they are closed on Saturdays, otherwise 11-7 Sunday through Friday.
**Cakes & Ale- 4.5 of 5 Bwoops! This place rocks! The chef's exciting take on food does not disappoint. However you may want to go earlier instead of later; they were out of 50% of the chalkboard menu. (Isn't that the point of a chalkboard? You can erase what's not available.) Local celebrity food lovers were also spotted there, so something must be good. ***NOTE: This review was written long before I even dreamed of working there.
Carroll Street Cafe- 3 of 5 Bwoops! This coffee house/bistro/bar is great for any occasion. The food and atmosphere is comfortable. This is the best of the "____ Diem" series (Carpe Diem in Decatur and Apres Diem in Midtown Promenade). The bloody marys are often praised. I heard they sneak some Guinness in them. Order the super size. The rum punch is dalliscious. Sometimes I wonder if there aren't hidden dust bunnies on the floor or ceiling however. Time for spring cleaning... what does the kitchen look like? Yikes!
Colonnade Restaurant- 3.5 of 5 Bwoops! There is some Dalliscious fried chicken and gravy here! The mac 'n cheese, while appealing to some, was a little too smooth and thus seemingly processed to me. I need to feel the texture of some real cheddar. Everyone left pleased!
The Crazy Cuban- 3.5 of 5 Bwoops! An authentic and tasty sandwich is offered here in a casual environment. I was impressed that my meat actually seemed moist and the low prices seemed authentic too. Rumor is Aldo is looking to add alcohol. Hurray if that happens!
Daddy D'z- 3.5 of 5 Bwoops! This is some good BBQ and sides! The beer selection is inconsistent and sometimes lacking, but the BBQ isn't. Dark thick yummy sauce!
Delia's Chicken Sausage Stand- 3.25 of 5 Bwoops! This is some good chicken, but the jury is still out. I tried the meat ball sub and found it yummy. I also had the Shredder- chicken sausage with coleslaw, chili and a spicy sauce. This sauce was called mustard, but it didn't taste anything like that and was super sweet; it may have been the house sauce. If that was the case, I saw no mustard. My slushy drinks was SO SWEET I could barely get it down. What's up with all the sugar, especially in this health-conscious day? I drank my hubbie's contains-no-tea organic berry tea instead. I need to try breakfast. I didn't hear positive vibes on breakfast so we'll see. The beer selection stinks. Oh... it's nonexistent. Boo!
Elliott Street Deli & Pub- 4 of 5 Bwoops! Technically this is a bar, but they do have, according to the owner, "F*CKING Boar's Head" sandwiches which truly are Dall-ish! They use fresh breads and toppings. The beer listing is never up to date and changes often; thus ask if you want something in particular.
Farm Burger- 4 of 5 Bwoops! I'm ecstatic to report that Farm Burger is Dalliscious!, locally raised, and multiple other great things. The burger combos are inventive. My burger was perfectly cooked. They have great beer selections. (I would have liked to have received my beer slightly faster and have an easier means of reordering one.) Ironically my alphabetical list places Farm Burger directly next to burger competitor, FLIP. There should be no reason for anyone to go to FLIP outside of location needs.
FLIP Burger Boutique- 3 of 5 Bwoops! This is good food (not great), the service a little too fast, decent price, but the snotty management hasn't made me want to return. If your going to ask me how my meal is and you see and acknowledge it indeed is inferior then do something about it OR don't ask me. This place is more about atmosphere than food.
*Five Seasons Brewery- 4.25 of 5 Bwoops! Excellent crafted brews and the local foods are Dall-ish! Even the sides are outstanding. Their use of fresh ingredients means things may change around some, but it continues to make my taste buds dance. BWOOP! BWOOP! The Antelope Patty Melt is a MUST! They also have gluten free beer on tap nearly everyday. And it's good!!!
Fritti- 3.5 of 5 Bwoops! Fritti has great gourmet pizza with tasty meats and toppings, like arugula and real olives, not those ones from a can. It's thin crust and irregular shape appear to be true Italian in style and the fact that their pizza chef speaks little English adds to this true Italian feel. Their fried calamari is also excellent. Their menu used to have non-pizza items, like steak. I wish they'd bring this back as sometimes there is one member of the party that doesn't want pizza. BWOOP! Dalliscious indeed!
Fox Brothers- 3.5 of 5 Bwoops! From the number of cars that are in continually in the parking lot, this place definitively has a following. The BBQ I found delicious, but I found the appetizer combinations a little too white trash. Shredded meat over tater tots with melted cheese. I know some at my table thought it was great, but I found it a little too ordinary. I know... it's BBQ. I guess I like more traditional dishes, like black-eyed peas or BBQ shrimp, not ones Mom would make when she and Dad went out for the evening and hired a babysitter- like tater tot casserole.
4th & Swift - 3.5 of 5 Bwoops! I was introduced to Jay Swift's food at Les Dames d'Escoffier's Serenbe Food and Wine event, a steak tartare. It was I thought the best thing I ate all day. I proceeded to take my family there for dinner and specially ordered each of my guests a tasting of this Dalliscious dish. Each stated it was the meal star and raved about it for days afterwards. While there were some other outstanding menu items that night, sweetbreads and chocolate doughnuts, overall no one left thinking the menu items were drawing them back.
Grant Central Pizza (East and Original) - 4 of 5 Bwoops! I raised my rating after a recent visit. I continue to say it's the best casual pizza in the city. I hadn't had it in a while and was instantly reminded of why it's so yummy. The sauce is mildly spicy but not too much. The crust has great flavor and is the right texture. Unrelated to the food, they have no website. I suppose this is part of the charm of the place; it really supports itself on neighborhood business and word of mouth sales. NOTE: It's not NY pizza. Highland Bakery- 3 of 5 Bwoops! Best grits contender! The breakfast is better than the baked goods. I've tried several cupcakes and each leaves me disappointed. I've had mixed results using them for wholesale baked items for work; some items were really outstanding like a par-baked pizza crust, others not so great.
Highland Tap- 3 of 5 Bwoops! This cellar restaurant and bar is a good for steaks and their brunch is Dall-ish. The sides are good too. The service can be off, but not enough to keep me away.
Holy Taco- 3.75 of 5 Bwoops! Genuine casual Mexican at great prices. I really don't get why they weren't included in Atlanta Magazine's Eat Cheap issue. They would have been top of my list for Tacos section. The beer selection needed some local assistance but they addressed that issue- with one option. Overall the beers I think are a wee over-priced, but I can be frugal. I've had good margs there, although sometimes they can be heavy on the ice. (See also sister listing, One Eared Stag.)
Holeman & Finch- 4 of 5 Bwoops! In need of a late night dinner, this place hit the spot! I missed the limited nightly burgers, but chowed on an incredible crawfish pie, empanada style. The food was out quickly and our server very friendly and knowledged. Their drinks are a hit also. Dalliscious all around!
JCT Kitchen- 3.5 of 5 Bwoops! This is the best meal I've had out dining in a while. The duck 'n dumplings was outrageous, lovely crispy duck meat alongside gnocchi in a reduction sauce that was out of this world. I've returned and had other great items, outside of the fried chicken salad. It was just boring. I wanted to give them a higher rating, but their service each time I go hasn't really allowed this. The food... that's Dalliscious!
Legal Sea Foods- 3.5 of 5 Bwoops! The crab soup is so Dalliscious, it nearly makes me cry (and the watermelon martini is incredible); the wood grilled fish is also exceptional... I could go on and on. Sometimes the service is lacking. Good oysters too.
Local Three- 3.5 of 5 Bwoops! The decor here is intimate yet casual. The food mixed. The pimento cheese tried too hard to be unique and was lacking that typical sharp cheddar bite. My friend and I both agreed it tasted like the center of a pizza combo. The lamb sandwich was exceptional and I can't wait to return and try the lobster roll. The service was great.
Max's Coal Oven Pizzeria- 3 of 5 Bwoops! I've had to lover my rating here. I'm still excited I can finally walk to decent pizza- it's coal-fired and dalliscious, but the service is continually poor. Unfortunately the staff changes regularly and the place is often packed with conventioners and very loud. It seems to be the only kid friendly dining in this area. I guess that's the price of living downtown. The $1 gelato cones are yummy.
One Eared Stag- 3.5 of 5 Bwoops! I need to return here before making a good assessment. What I had was dalliscious, raw oysters, a crab salad sandwich and shrimp po boy. The menu is not vegetarian friendly, such as offering salads with pork belly. The space is inviting and fun; animal heads decorate the walls. The pricing is somewhat deceiving. Average prices for dishes, but small portions- pretty much a la carte dining. Beer prices are also average. Once you add it all up it's not really a bargain, but also not terribly expensive. They also need to do some minor tracking adjustments on their web page. I almost didn't find it. It should and could easily be first on the list. (See also sister listing, Holy Taco.)
Ormsby's- 3 of 5 Bwoops! I like the decor here, lots of wood, but the clientele needs some help. If you're a bar patron, your tie needs to be loosened, particularly when someone tells you that. The food is alright. I have yet to try a burger. Don't get the chili. For some reason they think chili and sugar go together. The indoor basement bacci court is fun.
Parish Foods & Goods- 3 of 5 Bwoops! There are multiple, great tasting, fast (but not fast food) options - pastries, coffee, eggs, sandwiches, etc. I recently lowered their rating as the upstairs service is awful. Twice I've been nearly run out of the place at 10:30 (already seated and eating for a while). That's too early and rude to starting stacking chairs on tables around groups of diners. The wine tastings are educational and tasty. Check out Wine for Normal People if you're interested.
*Peasant Bistro- 4 of 5 Bwoops! This place is Dalliscious! The shrimp & grits are some of the best I've had in Atlanta. They get extra bwoops for serving Cassoulet in the winter, one of my favorite dishes.
**Pine Street Market- 4.5 of 5 Bwoops! FINALLY a cured meats place! I'm so excited that someone saw this need and filled it with such Dalliscious! products. The salami, sausage, pancetta, coppa, bacon... it's ALL terrific! Plus they sell Sweet Grass Dairy cheeses. Bwoop! How about something besides pork?
The Porter Beer Bar- 3.5 of 5 Bwoops! I've been here and had really great food, but my latest trip was disappointing. The mac 'n cheese, burgers, and salads are terrific with great fresh ingredients. However, my latest order, the shrimp 'n grits, was not desirable. The grits were excellent, topped with truffled portabello mushrooms (arguably too much truffle), but the shrimp appeared to be canned and they were poached as opposed to getting that great flavor from pan searing or grilling. This is not what I would expect from this establishment. They may have felt the need to substitute because of recent Gulf petroleum issues, but if so this situation was poorly handled. Either remove the item altogether from the menu or substitute with something more appropriate. Any consumer would understand if the server stated "The Shrimp 'n Grits are now Crawfish 'n Grits because of the issues with the Gulf," or a pan-seared fish, etc. (Wisteria does a terrific skate and grits!) Or "I'm sorry. The Shrimp 'n Grits are no longer available."
Pura Vida- 3.75 of 5 Bwoops! This is a constant and consistent dalliscious hit for food in Atlanta, even before Chef Hector Santiago made television fame on Bravo's Top Chef. The menu changes fairly often so diners stay on their tastebud toes, but old hits like the Crimini Mushroom Dip keep diners returning. The atmosphere is upbeat and the wine list refreshing and reasonably priced. Go enjoy if you haven't already!!
*Quinones- 4.5 of 5 Bwoops! Who knew Georgia has good wine; the service and food are outstanding (I got a stool for my purse too- Bwoop!) I had the best wine pairings here I'd ever had.
Real Chow Baby- 3 of 5 Bwoops! This concept is great. Sometimes the lines can be long however and dinner is overpriced. Stick to lunch.
Ria's Blue Bird-3.5 of 5 Bwoops! Consistent, good grits, limited menu. I'm not sure the wait is worth it. Plus, I'm boycotting Ria. I've heard several rumblings of unethical business tactics. Sauce won't be making it on my "I'd like to sample and enjoy" list.
Rolling Bones-3.6 of 5 Bwoops! The I tried to order a smoked duck sandwich but it was out so I order a three slider plate and some coleslaw. Each slider was quite dallisicous and plentiful. The one that blew me away was the brisket. I'm generally not a beef BBQ fan, but this was worthy of a re-order. Nice and smoky! Additionally, the slaw was really terrific, although it had raisins of which I'm personally not a fan. The place recently turned over and I think it has improved since. Recommended for sure!
Shed at Glenwood-3.6 of 5 Bwoops! I dined here for brunch and it was Dall-ish. Their slider night is quite popular and after tasting a few I can see why. It can get noisy however so beware if you're headed there on a busy night. Go on slider night. Yum!
SoBa- 4 of 5 Bwoops! I love this place and find myself going back often. It's cheap and dalliscious and different than the usual intown fare. Number 31 is my favorite! I always end up taking some home and making it into a frittata the next day. Dalliscious all over again.
SOCIAL- 3 of 5 Bwoops! Incredible wine deals! Beware of problems on crowded dinner days, like Valentine's Day. I've had to lower my rating some as the service continues to be problematic. One night I went and ordered a cheese for my platter and was told it was out. The table next to me ordered it afterwards and received it. STATS - 3 of 5 Bwoops! Good option if you need to incorporate sports. The food their is far better than the average sports bar. However the pricing is expensive. Stone Soup Kitchen - 3.5 of 5 Bwoops! Great all around. The Gambler is yummy but can be messy. I've not yet tried their lunch menu but have friends that rave about it. Get the cheese grits; the plain can't stand up by themselves.
Sublime Doughnuts- 3.5 of 5 Bwoops! I kept hearing about this doughnut shop from multiple sources so decided one day to check it out for myself. I sampled several offerings including the red velvet, Butterfinger, mocha A (shaped like the letter in honor of ATL), and peaches 'n cream. The red velvet was a disappointment, not velvety but crumbly and dry-- a typical cake donut vs. doughnut. The Butterfinger, while delicious, was super sugary. Peaches 'n cream is really white chocolate and I liked this. The one that blew me over and I've since returned for is the mocha A. It is divine and will leave you ready to eat another one instantaneously. Definitively DALLISCIOUS!!!
Super Pan Latino Sandwich Shop- 3.5 of 5 Bwoops! These sandwiches are a refreshing change to the usual. The combinations of items are like a quick vacation to a tropical region, which region isn't as clear. The bread here is dalliscious, definitively important with a sandwich. TAP- 3.5 of 5 Bwoops! This gastro pub is worth experiencing. The food, drinks and patio are exceptional. Sometimes they have crappy bands inside however that make me want to run.
Thumbs Up Diner- 3 of 5 Bwoops! At a tie with Highland Bakery for best grits, but they need to get some variety in the menu soon. Even the specials are consistently the same. Tomatillo's- 3 of 5 Bwoops! For a burrito joint, it was okay and at reasonable prices. The meat lacked seasoning. The atmosphere it a little too Moe's for me. Again, no web site; I guess I'm overly obsessed with what I thought was a business requirement.
Vickery's- 3.5 of 5 Bwoops! I love the atmosphere at Vickery's and enjoy the food with regularity. Their consistency has improved so I've recently their upped the rating. Plus I enjoy their brunch menu. Look for a BOGO coupon in Savvy Shopper.
Victory Sandwich Bar- 4 of 5 Bwoops! Calling this a sandwich bar is a fitting description. The place has dining tables throughout the establishment, but the bar seems to be the heart of the activity. The bread here is unbelieveable, from Midtown's Bakeshop. It's worth returning alone. I like the half sandwich approach. Looooow prices, but only for a half a sandwich. This makes mix 'n match easy. The chips that come with the half are a half portion too. Warning, sometimes the sides don't taste freshly made but leftover from an earlier day.
Wisteria- 3 of 5 Bwoops! I had this restaurant as one of my top picks. "BWOOP! BWOOP! An upscale neighborhood bistro with upscale food and wines and a professional and attentive staff. Try the skate over grits! It's DALLISCIOUS!" However my recent experience there was so awful I lowered them substantionally in my ratings. The service remained high but the food was so below par I couldn't believe it. I ordered pasta that was cooked to mush and literally falling apart on the plate. My beloved skate and grits dish was blackened on my brother's plate. Both dishes should have never made to out of the kitchen or through the server's filter. I've heard bad reports from others so move forward at your own risk.
Woodfire Grill- 3.75 of 5 Bwoops! I had a chef's tasting with wine pairings at this restaurant (thanks in part to a gift certificate). I found the meal incredible at times, in particular a serving of wood fired quail. Other times not so incredible. One course was a serving of sockeye salmon with a ginger cream sauce. However the ginger was so strong I couldn't taste the salmon. The wines were delicious. We also had the world's creepiest (yet polite) wine steward. He looked like the Joker from Batman and would smile and scare us with his evil clown smile. On the other hand our waitress, Jo Jo, was terrific. However this was not her chosen career path and was looking to leave soon. As an update, my friend recently dined there and knew exactly who the Joker was. Thus, I guess he really does kind of look like that.
Yeah! Burger - 3 of 5 Bwoops! My friend summed it up when she stated "Yeah Burger not so much, more like Nah Burger." There were some nice pieces to the meal however, the coleslaw and beer selection for instance. The burgers and fries weren't necessarily bad, they just didn't jump out as great. Farm Burger has them beat. I don't understand the policy of cooking all burgers medium other than for operations benefit. Why ruin good meat? The H&M bun was fantastic. I've also had the Udi's gluten-free bun and it was tasty too.
I'd like to sample and enjoy:
Miller Union
Go only if in a pinch: Fellini's Pizza- 2 of 5 Bwoops! I believe Fellini's made a name for themselves before there were so many pizza option in Atlanta. The sauce is good, but that's it. Additionally, the menu really doesn't offer anything of worthiness. There's nothing wrong with Fellini's, but there's also nothing to make it stand out. If I want pizza, this isn't the place.
Pizzeria Vesuvius- 2.5 of 5 Bwoops! This
is more of a music hall/pizzeria. The lovely downstairs was built out
by a prior owner who didn't make it and is now a music hall. The pizza
here is okay. It's not New York style, rather it has thicker crust. They
smoke their own meats and that smoky taste comes through to the pie and
gives Vesuvius a well enjoyed unique flavor. But that flavor is only on
certain meats. The service stinks and the pies take a long time to
cook.
Savage Pizza- 2.5 of 5 Bwoops! There's nothing really wrong with it. There's nothing really great about it either.
Sidebar- 1 of 5 Bwoops! They have decent pressed sandwiches and killer fries, but the service continually stinks. Mainly, the fact that they call it a sports bar is a misnomer. The music is always so loud you can't hear even a TV in your own booth. This is a college bar and Gator HQ. (See sister bar Engine 11, below.)
Six Feet Under- 2 of 5 Bwoops! I REALLY want to like this place, but I have yet to have a decent meal there. If it were dirt cheap I might be more forgiving, but it's not. The only thing I order there if I have to go are the crab cakes (a little bready). The fish tacos are OK, but it's catfish. (Admittedly, I'm a fish snob and am not likely to order catfish or tilapia.) Also, why do a few tiny pieces of catfish cost $10? The shrimp and grits are an embarrassment. That said the bar area is nice and has a good selection of beers.
Slice- 1.5 of 5 Bwoops! The crust has NO flavor.
Thrive - 2 of 5 Bwoops! I had some REALLY good clam chowder here, but that was about all that knocked my napkin off.
Ones to avoid: FAB: French American Bistro - 3 of 5 Bwoops! For the price there is MUCH better. Taqueria del Sol - 2 of 5 Bwoops! I can get crabby attitude anywhere, I don't need to travel here for extra. No Mas- 1 of 5 Bwoops! If you are only drinking, it is good; otherwise canned shrimp doesn't do it for me.
Engine 11 - 1.5 of 5 Bwoops! Bad service, bad menu, bad food. If you are ONLY drinking, okay, but get ready to wait for service. (See sister bar Sidebar, above.)
